Hiking and bicycling can take you around the block or around the world.

You can explore an astounding variety of roads and trails.

In our case, we managed to find beaches, jungles, mountain tops, remote places, popular places and a bunch of new languages.

It’s all part of the adventure.

So go take a hike!

Go ride a bike!

So, what is an adventure exactly?

According to Wikipedia, “an adventure is an exciting or unusual experience. It may also be a bold, usually risky undertaking, with an uncertain outcome. Adventures may be activities with some potential for physical danger.

Adventurous experiences create psychological arousal, which can be interpreted as negative (e.g. fear) or positive (e.g. flow). For some people, adventure becomes a major pursuit in and of itself.

Outdoor adventurous activities are typically undertaken for the purposes of recreation or excitement. Adventurous activities can also lead to gains in knowledge. Adventure education intentionally uses challenging experiences for learning.”

Our Adventures

On this site are some of the adventures we have pursued since 1984. There are many we simply never thought about recording for the future. We only started writing them down and photographing them when we realized we wanted to be able to look back and relive the intense feelings. After all, reliving an adventure after it is completed is another form of adventure. It keeps the juices flowing and precipitates an eagerness to begin another.

The pages that follow are filled with stories and photographs of our hiking biking adventures all over the world.

It is our goal to get your juices flowing!

The fledgling result of our record keeping coalesced into published articles in National Magazines such as Bicycling Magazine, Cyclist Magazine, Canoe & Kayak Magazine and more.

As the years progressed, so did our photographing, mapping and recording skills. That led us to publishing our own books. We started with hiking guides and have expanded to bicycling.

We have 4 hiking guide books and two bicycling books with more to come.

There are many hiking guidebooks to choose from…

…So Why Would You Choose Ours?

  • We, the authors of this, and all our guidebooks, are hikers.
  • We personally researched and hiked all the hiking trails in our books.
  • We took the photographs.
  • Our innovative Hikes Chart lists all of the hikes on the first page so you can compare the scenic rating, difficulty, distance, elevation gain and important features of all the hiking trails in one place.
  • We tell you why you might want to hike this trail. We tell you what you will see and give the trail a scenic rating.
  • We created the detailed maps and our colored coded system for visually defining the difficulty level of all the hiking trails.
  • Our elevation profiles have the same color coding for steepness of gradient. We calculate the total elevation gain of the entire trail.
  • Our directions to the trailhead are clear and concise. For some, we even include a map. We tell you what vehicle you need to get there and the condition of the road.
  • We found such detail missing or frustrating to find in other books, so we wrote our own!

On Our Own-A Bicycling Adventure in Southeast Asia
Hiking Biking Adventures-On Our Own A Bicycling Adventure in South East Asia

On Our Own A Bicycling Adventure in South East Asia

On Our Own is about an 8000 mile journey by bicycle through the heart of Southeast Asia.

Anne and Mike Poe, an American couple in their mid-fifties, journeyed for six months from Bali, Indonesia through Java, Sumatra, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and China until finally reaching Hong Kong.

Experience the Poes’ unique adventure as they sojourn on their own with no guides to show them the way, no organized tours to fix all the problems and no translators to read the menus.

Their stories tell the truth about what it really feels like to travel into the lives of the local populations.

Meet head on the rising aspirations of a Third World continent banging at the door of change yet still very much imprisoned by the infrastructure and philosophical viewpoints of its past.

It is, without doubt, a prime region for provocative travel experiences.

This review is from: Crested Butte Colorado: 65 Scenic Day Hikes (Paperback)
I am someone who likes to hike, but I am also a mom with two young children – and I like to hike with them. I loved using this book on a recent trip to Crested Butte, because unlike so many other hiking books, this one had enough detail for me to determine whether or not the hike would be appropriate for my family. The photography is stunning, and the detailed descriptions, maps and charts for each hike will ensure you will never be lost. I love how they ranked each hike based on difficulty, as well as star value (scenic or not). And there are so many hikes to choose from – enough variety and options for all levels of hikers. I will be making several return visits to Crested Butte (with and without my children), and this will be the only hiking book I will need. Anne and Mike really put a lot of effort into creating the highest quality hiking book, made for hikers by hikers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series of Guidebooks, August 5, 2013
This review is from: Crested Butte Colorado: 65 Scenic Day Hikes (Paperback)
I recently purchases this guidebook by Anne & Mike Poe as well as their Utah Parks guidebook. I just did my first hike using this book and the books information was precise, helpful, and easy to understand. From the directions to get to the trailhead to the suggestions for short trips to overlooks along the way, it was an invaluable tool. For novices looking to explore a new area, or for seasoned hikers looking to expand their hikes, this is the book you want to have. Thoughtfully laid out, I particularly like the way it breaks down the hikes into geographical areas with a map showing all of the trails in that area. A funny thing happened as I was doing this hike was that I ran into a family on this hike who were walking along with their copy of this book in their hand as they went. I will be doing much more hiking in these areas because of this book. Great guidebook!

I’ve poured over the 1st edition and was ready to order it when I saw that this updated version has been released. I like the 1st edition a lot. I LOVE the 2nd one. The detailed information just amazed me. Read reviews about 1st edition for more on that.Several new maps were added, including one that shows the big picture in where all the trails are located in relation to Crested Butte, on one map. They’ve also made the topo maps included less cluttered appearing than the ones in the 1st edition and much easier to read because each trail map route is magnified. Each trail has it’s own topo map. No more guess work as to which fork in the road or trail to take, they’re color highlighted. They’ve added many pictures of locations on the trails with wildflowers in bloom in the foreground and scenic backgrounds so if you’re a photographer you can see what it looks like before going on the hikes. More space is devoted to the wildflower hikes. More panorama style shots too. They’ve also gone into greater detail what type of vehicle you need to access the specific trails. It’s a paperback format, but nylon thread was used to reinforce the binding to make it more durable. It measures 6 1/8″ X 9″ X 9/16″ thick so you can take it along on every hike. You won’t need any other maps besides the ones in the book.If you might want to camp, in the back of this book is a section listing campgrounds, types of conditions, and if there is an outhouse or not.So if you’re interested in wildflower hikes, hikes in the largest Aspen grove in the world, or just scenic mountain hikes, this is the book to get. I wish that all hiking books had this kind of thorough detailed approach. I predict you’ll be spoiled after seeing this book. A must have if you intend to hike in this area. Very well done Anne & Mike!

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING GUIDE BOOK- A MUST HAVE!!!!, August 4, 2012

This review is from: Crested Butte Colorado: 65 Scenic Day Hikes (Paperback)
I used this book for a trip to Crested Butte last week and all i can say is WOW, WELL DONE! This seriously is the best guide book I have ever seen. The “All Hikes Chart” in the front of the book is brilliant- it is any easy to read chart by area to let you know if the route is a round trip, shuttle or loop, has a color coded rating of the difficulty, gives a star value for scenery, lists mileage, elevation gain, what type of vehicle is needed to make it to the trail head and what could be on the trail- bicycles, horses, flowers and/ or aspens. I had to laugh as I saw 5 other people all with this book when doing the Scarp Ridge hike and everyone agreed this book is a must have for avid hikers going to CB. If you are going to Ouray & Silverton then you must also get a copy of their other book- Southwest Colorado: High Country Day Hikes. My only suggestion is that even though southwest CO & CB may have some of the prettiest sceneryin CO, my front range friends wanted to know if you have books for other areas……hmmmm something to think about! 🙂

This book added so much to our trip to the Crested Butte area! The number of hikes available is so large that it really helped to have this book to help narrow it down to the best ones for us. It’s incredibly detailed, and has each hike outlined in many different ways- verbal descriptions, pictures, topo maps, difficulty graphs, etc. We found the directions and descriptions to be spot on. All in all, an invaluable partner to take along as a guide!

This review is from: Crested Butte Colorado: 65 Scenic Day Hikes (Paperback)
We have hiked Crested Butte for 29 years, and used this book for six great hikes this week – discovering parts of Crested Butte we didn’t really know existed. The hike descriptions are accurate, distances correct, and images really open up the various high mountain basins. We have never seen a better hiking guide – anywhere.

Ouray, Silverton Lake City Book Reviews

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase

We used this book during a trip to Ouray, Ridgway, and Silverton Colorado in July, 2014. Lots of good data to help us choose hikes. Great photographs, detailed descriptions of trails. It covered a few different hikes from Kelvin Kent’s Ouray Hiking Guide. Interesting double rating system: one rating for the “approach” part of the hike, and another for the “destination” part. As with most hiking guides, “moderate” to them means “pretty darn hard” to me. With this book and Kent’s book, I felt we had a pretty complete guide to the area’s trails. An expensive book, but I thought it was well worth it.

The Poes have written several Colorado hiking guides. They are all great. A major improvement in this one is less clutter on the maps. Attention to detal is so important in a guide and they continue to do this. Novice or experienced hikers should have this book.

The authors write the best hiking guides I’ve ever read. I love the glossy pages and the beautiful color photographs. Since the book is meant for day hikers, the weight of the book is totally acceptable for carrying. The hikes summary make it easy to choose a trail from many. Everything was helpful – the rating system, maps, really everything. I appreciate the authors are great with logistics – how to get to trailhead & what kind of parking to expect when you get there. I have no complaints and think this is a great buy.

This is my 3rd guidebook from Take A Hike and Telluride is just as wonderful as the Crested Butte and Southwest Colorado Guidebooks!Anne & Mike do such a good job with stunning, color photos so you know what you will see on your hike, easy to read detailed maps with GPS coordinates, clear directions and how long it takes to get to trail head and what kind of vehicle you need. The chart in the front gives a quick overview of level of difficulty (color coded to show easy to strenuous), star value (which hikes are most scenic), miles, elevation gain, if there are Aspens, flowers and bikes on the trail and elevation gain. They have thought of everything! There are also hikes that you won’t find anywhere else. Truly the most comprehensive guidebook I have ever seen. You must buy this book if you are hiking anywhere in Telluride! Happy trails!

This hiking guide is just what I’ve been looking for since moving to Telluride six years ago. The authors really put so much of themselves in this book, and it shows. They hiked all of the trails and included GPS coordinates, excellent maps showing the contour lines, difficulty rating, and a star rating system if you want to quickly find a hike with the best view rating. Plus a nice bonus is all of the photos are in color. Many of the trails in the Telluride area are joined together, and the authors did a wonderful job of giving the different options available according to what you have time to hike. I recommend this guide to be in your backpack right away!

This guidebook was all I needed for my seven day hiking trip to Telluride. Used Telluride as a base and did day hikes from there. Highly recommend the book. Great trail descriptions, just the right amount of photos, directions to trailhead were spot on. I have a shelf-full of hiking books and this one compares favorably to the best of them.

This book is good for both someone who will be in Telluride for a while and also a quick visitor to get the most of out of your time in the area. I enjoyed this book and also the other one by authors covering Ouray, Silverton, and Lake City. For the amount of useful information you get, the book is a bargain.

Arches & Canyonlands Book Reviews
5.0 out of 5 stars A new admirer of the Poe’s, April 21, 2014

This review is from: Utah National Parks Arches & Canyonlands Day Hikes (Paperback)
This hiking guide is awesome. At first it confused me a bit: the cover layout made it fill old – it’s from 2013. And it feels cluttered – but it’s not. It’s not even disorganized, it’s just brimming with details. You just have to get used to it. Overall so much better than the more modern looking Falcon guide which I came to completely ignore (see review there). These folks walked every foot, analyzed different return points for every route to provide a selection of distances. They provide a general map of each of the areas complete with rough location of each trailhead, and a detailed topo map of each hike, along with elevation plots and tables. What more can you ask for?I have but a handful wee suggestions: the color coded difficulty level in the all hikes summary table at the beginning was, well, difficult to make intuitive. I also think that if the Poe’s organized the book a tad more its quality would leap out at you rather than creep up on you. Last but not least, as a firs and short-term hiker I wanted to fish out the best hikes in each area. To do so I had no choice but to wade into the full verbose and pull out what the authors thought was prettiest. I suppose a rank for beauty is something the authors shy away from consciously. Could have helped (but then again might have sent ‘everyone’ down the same trails I picked. Overall I’d say the Poes have a new admirer.

This review is from: Utah National Parks Arches & Canyonlands Day Hikes (Paperback)
I have all the Poe hiking guides and this one on Arches and Canyonlands is just as beautiful and detailed as the others. They offer a refreshing change to the standard Falcon Guides that have been available for years. The book is all color with excellent maps and profiles for every hike. The photos capture the heart of each trail. I like the new options they give for long difficult trails. If you are going to Utah, this book should be in your pack.

A thoughtful, colorful book on bicycle travel. I find her experiences on 2 wheel travel, especially through lovely Bali, to mirror my own. I appreciate that her rides through Hill and Dale are not effortless. I love bicycle touring, but for me it is work, even at distances of less than 70 km a day. I found and read this book because I am planning a trip to Vietnam this spring. I will update my impressions after I come back. For now let’s say that her descriptions of bicycle touring on a budget without a guided tour are accurate, and helpful. It is not glamorous, but satisfying, compelling, and oh so much cheaper. You learn a lot more about the people, and thrill with the discovery of the hidden gem of a tucked away restaurant and inn. I do have to say that now we have the advantage of Trip Advisor, Google Maps, and phone GPS’s, which I think will make these type of experiences easier and more successful. I also ask others to continue to formally report their experiences. You smooth out the bumps for those of us who follow.

“On Our Own” is beautifully written with vivid descriptions, clever use of metaphors and laced with photos mesmerizing me into believing I was actually there taking in the sights and sounds of Southeast Asia.
What an adventure! Thank you, Anne Poe for allowing me to live this extraordinary experience of the arduous 8000 mile trip without my having to shed a single drop of perspiration or having to endure the multitude of personal discomforts of the third world.
This book was difficult to put down and was definitely a learning experience.
