Hiking Mexico & South America

Our first trip was 1986 in Mexico. The most recent was Argentina in 2006

Read our stories and enjoy the photographs on the pages that follow.

We hope they inspire you to plan and fullfill your own adventure.

Hiking Mexico & South America

A lifetime of adventures await

There are many interesting areas to hike in Mexico, but we have gone back to one place three times.

Las Barrancas del Cobre, known as Copper Canyon to the English speaking world, is really 6 incredibly deep canyons formed by 6 main river systems. All six rivers merge into the Rio Fuerte and empty into the Gulf of California. The walls of the canyon are a copper and green color which is where the name originates.

They are bigger than the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

They are located in the Sierra Tarahumara, (the Sierra Madre Occidental) in the northern Mexican State of Chihuahua.

Hiking trails in these canyons are not easy to follow. Our trips were more an adventure than hiking as you can see in our photos and stories.

Most sane backpackers hire a guide or go with a tour. We did not!

Hiking Mexico & South America-Cerro Catedral Argentina

We have hiked in Argentina and Chile two different summers.

There are so many places to go in these three countries…it would take a lifetime to see them all.

We hiked in Peru while riding bikes from Costa Rica to Peru in 1986.

The first time in Argentina and Chile 2003, we traveled by local transportation.

On the second trip in 2006 we bought a car in Santiago and sold it back to the seller after 6 months. In doing this, be careful and make certain you get the necessary papers to take the car across the border…in either direction. Chile & Argentina are still nursing historical issues!

In addition to the places we have added to these pages, we also hiked the famous Torres del Paine “W” route in Chile, as well as numerous trails in our favorite Argentine town…El Calafate. Regrettably, we lost all the photos from that season of travel. However, we recommend you research these two areas and add them to your itinerary. They are absolutely amazing.

Of the photos we have to show, which area was our favorite?

We would have to say Cerro Catedral in Bariloche!
